Within a visual arts arena we have each been engaged, as both practitioners and teachers with research into the idea of the practice of art as a mode of analysis. But as artists, we are also very aware of how little research has been done in foregrounding the making of art as research in its own right, outside of the teaching context. The more conventional approach to research in Fine Art is to employ critical analysis in order to place and fix the work of art.
As part of BALTIC Self-Publishing Artists' Market 2018 the Women Artists of the North East Library had a one-day residency in BALTIC Library researching the collection for records of exhibitions and projects by women artists associated with the North East. The documents found were pulled out of the collections to form a new online reading list of BALTIC Library. This also contributed to the Women Artists North East Library’s research.
This book now forms part of that reading list as it contains work by Joanna Greenhill (Newcastle Group)
