"Artist’s book commission by BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead as part of my MRLA residency there. The book contains two Braille poems and an introduction in Braille written in response to That’s Not Me, Rodney Graham’s 2017 retrospective exhibition at BALTIC. The exhibition took place across the level 3 and 4 gallery spaces and each of the poems responds to the work that appears on one of these levels.
I decided to use Braille after working with a brilliant art student at NCEA in Ashington who happened to be blind as part of the residency. The visual aspects of the book are my re-interpretation of Sigmund Freud’s Dream of the Botanical Monograph, a text cited by Rodney Graham as instrumental in the development of his literary works.
The book was made in an edition of four with two of the books being made available for the public to handle in the galleries during the exhibition and one of the books being added to the Baltic artist’s book collection."
