This small but perfectly formed book is the culmination of Susan Derges's year-long residency in King's Wood, Challock, Kent organised by Stour Valley Arts in 1999/2000. Derges uses the wood as a metaphor for the dark space of the imagination and for the 'darkroom' of the photographic process. Her beautiful photograms, in which iconic images of fungi and bluebells float against a black void-like space, and her pin-hole images of the wood itself, conjure a magical presence, part real part imagined. |
