Description

Co-commissioned and produced as part of Manchester International Festival 2017, ToGather addresses some of the most potent issues of our time: migration, movement and sensations of separation.

Half-Egyptian and half-German, Hefuna lives, works and exhibits across the world, making art that slips between the boundaries of nationality, gender, time and space.

Her exhibition at the Whitworth takes the form of a ‘mental map’ installed in several rooms at the gallery and parts of Whitworth Park, a series of palmwood structures, inspired by boxes seen on the streets of Hefuna’s native Cairo, are joined by a rich selection of drawings, vitrines, personal objects and a new digital work, all on themes of migration and separation, gathering and togetherness.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Susan Hefuna: ToGather at the Whitworth, Manchester (30 June – 3 September 2017).
