The Newcastle Group

The Newcastle Group
Library Shelf Location 14.ENNE
Publication Date 1987

The original Newcastle group was formed by T.M. Richardson in 1822. At this time Newcastel was relatively prosperous and the Group held a seres of exhibition in the city in the following decade. Some memebers of teh group saw art exhibitions as instruments of public intruction and improvement, while the others saw the exhibition simply as a means of furthering their own careers. Both 'factions' within the Group, however were united in their efforts to promote the North East as a centre of culture.

As part of BALTIC Self-Publishing Artists' Market 2018 the Women Artists of the North East Library had a one-day residency in BALTIC Library researching the collection for records of exhibitions and projects by women artists associated with the North East. The documents found were pulled out of the collections to form a new online reading list of BALTIC Library. This also contributed to the Women Artists North East Library’s research.

This book now forms part of that reading list.
